One person has died and seven others were injured when a ride malfunctioned on the opening day of the Ohio State Fair.

Several people were thrown from the Fire Ball ride when it malfunctioned. Video from a bystander, which Newshub has decided not to publish, shows part of the ride crash into something and disconnect, sent flying and hurling riders out.

Five of those injured are in a critical condition, while the other two are in a stable condition, Columbus fire battalion chief Steve Martin said.

All of the rides at the fair have been shut down while additional safety inspections take place.

Republican governor John Kaisch said in a statement he was "terribly saddened" by the accident and has ordered a full investigation.
