A South African television ad warning against the dangers of texting while driving has a devastating message for drivers.

The 40-second long road safety ad, produced by the Western Cape Government, has a humorous beginning before ending in devastating fashion.

The ad shows how incapable humans are of walking and texting with real life CCTV footage of people using their phones and falling over and walking into other people and objects.

The ad finishes with dashcam footage of a women driver thrown around in a horrific accident, an accident in which she was using her mobile phone.

"You can't even text and walk," mocks the ad.

"So why do text and drive?"

Twitter users applauded the ad for the message it was sending.

One user wrote, "It's so dangerous. It needs to be treated with the same stigma as drink driving."

Another tweeted: "I get angry enough with people texting and walking, never mind driving."
