The United States, Russia and Jordan have agreed to a ceasefire in Syria.

The announcement came after US President Donald Trump and Russia's Vladimir Putin held their first face-to-face meeting at the G20 summit in Hamburg.

"The Jordanian government says it will operate along a line agreed by both Syrian government forces and rebels," BBC correspondent Sebastian Usher reports.

"US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson says the deal is a first sign of success which could be replicated elsewhere. He said what makes this different from previous ceasefire plans is the commitment from Russia."

The ceasefire will begin in the next 48 hours.
