A man in the United States has nabbed himself a record-breaking catch during a fishing competition in Texas.

Tim McClellen broke a 30-year-old record when he caught a 1033lbs (468kg) hammerhead shark during the Texas City Jaycees' 2017 Tackle Time Fishing Tournament on Sunday, according to CBS.

A photo of Mr McClellen's catch was posted to the event's Facebook page, where it showed how big the catch really was, needing what appears to be a small crane to hold it up.

"Smashing a 30 [-year-old] State of Texas record, Mr Tim McClellen brought in this HUGE 1033lb Hammer Head Shark!" the post read.

"Thank you to all of the fishermen that participated in the tournament and all of our amazing sponsors and volunteers for helping us continue a Texas City Tradition!"

The post has been "liked" more than 900 times and shared by more than 1000 people.

Understandably, Mr McClellen hammered home first place with his mammoth catch.
