A school in Berlin has been forced to erect a giant anti-sex worker fence to protect the campus.

The sex workers were apparently using the Franzosisches Gymnasium high school grounds to relieve themselves, leaving behind discarded condoms, syringes and even excrement.

"There were always complaints about unscrupulous characters, including prostitutes, walking shamelessly and illegally into school grounds even during the day," district school inspector Carsten Spallek told the Berliner Zeitung .

The 1.8-metre-tall fence cost NZ$93,000, and is 125 metres long. It's been widely welcomed by locals, who are fed up at the mess.

"The prostitutes eat, stand, drink and litter. It looks filthy in the late evening," district coordinator Michael Klinnert told Berliner Zeitung.
