Hong Kong's 2017 Beer Run is to go ahead, but without alcohol after a flurry of criticism.

Up to 5000 people were expected to take part in the 1.6km run on November 4.

Joggers were due to be handed a 330 ml glass of beer after every 400 metres, but the health department said there concerns over dehydration.

Organisers now say alcohol will no longer be given out, but it'll still be called The Beer Run. It's not actually mandatory to drink, organisers said.

Last year's Beer Run was a success, with no major incidents.
