Hurricane Harvey: Rest home residents rescued from flooded lounge

Covered in blankets and towels, the residents of a Texas rest home found themselves stranded in the midst of severe floods after Hurricane Harvey devastated Houston.

Timothy McIntosh, whose mother-in-law owns the nursing home, tweeted the photo on Sunday (local time) to appeal for help.

The photo was shared thousands of times, alerting the National Guard to the situation and prompting a helicopter rescue operation.

By that afternoon, Mr McIntosh posted that the residents had been safely evacuated.

"We were air-lifting grandmothers and grandfathers," emergency management coordinator David Popoff told local media.

The fiercest hurricane to strike the US in more than a decade has left several dead and countless others homeless.
