Two openly gay students at a Missouri high school have had their quotes removed from their school yearbook.

Kearney High graduates Joey Slivinski and Thomas Swartz submitted their senior quotes before graduation.

However, when they opened their yearbooks, they found blank spaces under their names.

Joey put forward the quote: "Of course I dress well. I didn't spend all that time in the closet for nothing."

Thomas' quote read: "If Harry Potter taught us anything, it's that no one deserves to live in the closet."

The students say they were not notified of any concerns about their chosen quotes.

The Kearney School District say they removed the quotes among concerns they could "potentially offend" other students.

The school district issued a statement apologising to the students while also trying to defend their decision.

Joey shared his disappointment on Facebook.

The students plan to make stickers of their quotes to stick into their friends' yearbooks.
