The total solar eclipse in 18 stunning photos

The first total solar eclipse experienced in the United States since 1979 left millions of Americans stunned by the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Millions of viewers flooded social media and the internet with their perspective of the event that won't occur again until 2045.

There was a noticeable drop in temperature as the sun disappeared, many reported, with the darkness lasting for about two to three minutes.

Eclipse watchers were advised to wear special glasses and to avoid looking directly at the sun, to avoid eye damage.

However US President Donald Trump couldn't resist the temptation, and stared directly at it without glasses.

Of the thousands of photos, here are some of the best by Getty Images.
