A woman in Colorado who had her car scratched by a stranger has received an unconventional apology.

Mandi Shepard noticed a dent in the back of her car as she finished work, she told local news station KUSA.

It wasn't until she was driving home that she noticed an envelope tucked behind her side mirror, containing a written apology, two US$20 notes and half a joint.

"Sorry 4 the scratch man," the envelope read. "Hey I am very sorry truley [sic] please forgive me," the letter inside said.

Ms Shepard says while she doesn't smoke herself, it had her laughing all the way home.
