6.8 earthquake strikes near New Caledonia

A 6.8 magnitude earthquake has struck near New Caledonia on Tuesday afternoon.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said the earthquake occurred at 1.42PM (NZT). The earthquake was 16.7km deep and 117.48 km east of the Tadine, a town on the Loyalty Islands in New Caledonia.

Civil Defence says there are currently no warnings in place in New Zealand, and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has said there are currently no other warnings in place in the Pacific.

According to the USGS the earthquake took place in the Eastern Margin of the Australia Plate, 34 magnitude 7.5+ earthquakes have been recorded in the region since 1900.
