A couple in Florida received more than they bargained for when they were delivered nearly 30kg of cannabis by accident.

They had ordered four plastic storage bins from Amazon, but when they were delivered, they were far heavier than expected.

Opening the containers, the couple, who wish to remain anonymous for their own safety, said there was a strong smell.

Fearful their home would be broken into, the customers immediately called police.

"When the first officer got here, she was in disbelief," they told Orlando's WFTV.

Police seized the drugs and launched an investigation, but have not yet made any arrests.

"We love Amazon and do a lot of shopping on Amazon," the customers said.

They went back and forth via email for more than a month without speaking to a supervisor. Eventually they received an email with a $150 gift card.

The customers said all they really wanted was an apology.

"There was no concern for a customer's safety. I mean, this could have turned into a worst-case scenario."

Amazon issued a statement saying its customer service is cooperating with the customer and law enforcement officials.
