An Australian teenager is facing jail time after stealing a car and then dumping a child on the side of the road when he noticed them in the backseat.

Adam Scherwinski stole the car from a shopping centre in Dandenong in Victoria, Australia on June 19. The boy's father was inside shopping, and Scherwinski drove 1.5 kilometres before he realised there was a five-year-old boy in the backseat.

He then kicked the child out of the car at the side of a busy road during rush hour at 5.00pm, the Herald Sun reports.

The 19-year-old appeared via video link in the Dandenong Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, and could face up to two years behind bars when he is sentenced next week.

The court heard that the boy's father was traumatised and is "still haunted" by the incident. He is now "extremely cautious" about staying close to his children while out in public.
