Crashed metal detector causes airport chaos

Hundreds of passengers were left stranded at Auckland Airport due to a metal detector error on Wednesday night.

A power cut to the machines forced air commuters to be rescanned as a precaution, which delayed international flights.

More than 50 people got through before anyone noticed the machines weren't working. More than 1000 passengers were forced to be rescanned as a precaution.

Tom Warren was bound for Vancouver and told Newshub his flight was delayed by an hour-and-a-half.

"Everybody in the airport was moved to one side of the airport, [then had to head] back through the departure area again, through Customs, heading back into the airport proper again."

He said everyone was "happier to be safe than sorry".

International flights are back on schedule Thursday morning.
