Social media users were left out in the cold after an unexpected Facebook and Instagram outage on Thursday morning.

Users reported pages being unable to load, or only being able to load a blank page or specific parts of the site.

The website Down Detector, which monitors popular websites for outages, shows thousands of users commented that they were experiencing outage issues.

Facebook confirmed the outage, saying: "We're aware that some people are currently having trouble accessing Facebook and Instagram. We're working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible."

Due to its size and large number of users Facebook prides itself on rarely going offline, and users were quick to take to rival social media site Twitter to express their confusion.

Users have reported on Down Detector the site is now running as normal.
