Former US President George Bush Snr has apologised to an actress who claims he inappropriately touched her on the behind four years ago.

In a since-deleted Instagram post, Heather Lind said the now 93-year-old "touched [her] from behind from his wheelchair" and told a "dirty joke" as she posed for a photograph with him.

She also claims Mr Bush's wife, Barbara Bush, saw the incident unfold - before rolling her eyes and saying "not again".

In a statement to the Daily Mail, a spokesman for Mr Bush said he would "never - under any circumstance - intentionally cause anyone distress".

"He most sincerely apologises if his attempt at humour offended Ms Lind."

Mr Bush, who now suffers from Parkinson's disease, served one term as President of the United States between 1989 and 1993. He is the father of George W Bush, who served two terms as President between 2001 and 2009.
