The woman at the centre of one of the most viral photos from 2016 has spoken out for the first time about what really happened.

Molly Lensing was stranded in a Colorado airport when a stranger took a photo of her sitting on an airport seat on her phone while her two-month-old daughter lay on the floor.

It caused outrage online, with the person who posted it calling her an "idiot" and others mocking the mother-of-three for being more interested in her phone than her own child, TODAY reports.

Ms Lensing explained that after being caught up in delays and re-bookings, they had already spent 20 hours at the airport.

"We had the unfortunate luck of being stuck in the middle of the Delta computer shut-down," she said.

"[She] had been held or in her carrier for many hours. My arms were tired. She needed to stretch.

"And I had to communicate with all the family members wondering where the heck we were."

Even a year after the photo first went viral, Ms Lensing says it still haunts her.

"I absolutely feel as though my privacy was violated," she told TODAY.

"I had recently started working on a labour floor, and I was terrified of my co-workers or boss seeing the photo and comments and believing that I should no longer work with infants.

"Thankfully, this never happened."
