The brother of Las Vegas gunman Stephen Paddock has been taken into custody on child pornography charges.

Fifty-nine-year-old Bruce Paddock's computer contained 600 child porn images, which he left behind at a vehicle repair shop he squatted at three years ago, prosecutors say.

No one knew of his whereabouts after he was evicted from the shop in 2014, but police have been looking for him since.

The investigation into Mr Paddock ramped up after his brother undertook the deadliest mass shooting in modern US history earlier this month, killing 59 people and injuring more than 500.

Officials got a tip about his location after the shooting, and found him in at an assisted living centre in North Hollywood, California, where he is wheelchair-bound.

The FBI and Los Angeles Police Department used a joint task force to carry out the arrest.

He now faces one count of possession of more than 600 images of child pornography and 19 counts of sexual exploitation of a child.

Police say the alleged offences all occurred in an eight-month period, between January 1 and August 30 in 2014.
