A man in Hawaii has been given an unorthodox sentence after a judge sentenced him to write 144 compliments about his ex-girlfriend for breaching a protection order.

The Associated Press reports Darren Young was given the sentence after calling and messaging his ex-girlfriend with a total of 144 insults.

Judge Rhonda Loo said that Young could not repeat words while writing the compliments and needed to equal the number of mean things he had said to his ex.

Young said he was moving on with his life and would not contact his ex again.

As well as the compliments, Mr Young was sentenced to US$2400 (NZ$3503) in fines, 200 hours' community service and two years of probation.
