After experiencing severe stomach pains, a Californian woman went to hospital - only to give birth a few hours later.
Beth Clay, 45, had no idea she was pregnant, and had been working right up until the delivery. It's her third child, but the only one to arrive unannounced.
"The doctor feels sure that [the baby] was behind everything… behind my kidneys, behind my liver," Ms Clay told Los Angeles channel KTLA.
Ms Clay thought she had kidney stones when she went to the emergency room. Up until then she showed no symptoms, and even lost nearly seven kilograms throughout the pregnancy on a strict diet plan.
Her husband was in disbelief.
"I was like, 'That just can't be real. It's all contrived, never could happen. You would know if there was a baby in your belly'," he said.
The parents said it took them a day to absorb the news before they told their family.
Although shocking, her story isn't a one-off. There have been reported cases of women unexpectedly giving birth in New Zealand too.
