Three women have been barred from boarding a flight after plastic surgery left their faces unrecognisable.

The unidentified women were photographed clutching their passports with heavily swollen faces at an unnamed airport in South Korea.

According the Chinese publication Shanghaiist the women were barred from their return flight after security officials couldn't confirm their swollen faces matched the photos in their passports.

Asia Wire reported the three women flew to South Korea during China's Golden Week, a national holiday where Chinese people are encouraged to take vacations.

South Korea is a popular destination for medical tourism and more than 500,000 Chinese residents are reported to travel abroad for plastic surgery each year.

A photo of the trio was taken by Chinese TV Presenter Jian Huahua. In a now deleted social media post she joked not even their mothers would be able to recognise them

It is not yet clear if the women have been able to fly home.
