Doctor puts shark in its place in ocean rumble off Australia

A British doctor has survived a shark attack by punching the predator in its face off the coast of New South Wales.

Charlie Fry, 25, who only recently arrived in Australia, was inspired by surfing legend Mick Fanning, who fought off a great white attack in 2015 during a competition.

Mr Fry reported that up until now he had only been afraid of snakes and spiders, but quickly feared for his life when he saw the shark approach him off Avoca Beach on Monday.

"I was literally like, this is mental, like 'you're about to die.'"

"I saw it come out with its teeth and I instinctively just hit it in the face."

The surfer suffered a wound to his shoulder but escaped otherwise unharmed.
