An Ohio lawmaker known for his conservative values has resigned after being caught having sex with a man in his office.

The Independent reports that Wes Goodman, who had been called the "conscience of the Republican movement", was discovered in the compromising situation by a staffer who walked in.

According to the Columbus Dispatch, the staff member told Ohio Chief of Staff Mike Dittoe about it, who in turn told Ohio House of Representatives Speaker Cliff Rosenberger, who then met with Mr Goodman.

Shortly after the meeting took place, Mr Goodman resigned.

Mr Goodman took office on January 4, 2017, and was known for his insistence on what he called "natural marriage", which is between a man and a woman only.

He is currently married to the assistant director of annual anti-abortion rally "March for Life".

Mr Goodman's campaign website has been taken down and his Twitter account has now been made private.

Before the incident, his Twitter biography read: "Christian. American. Conservative. Republican. Husband to @Beth1027".
