If this nativity scene is to be believed, Jesus' birth truly was a miracle - but not for the reasons outlined in the Bible.

Cameron Esposito tweeted a photograph of her neighbours' forward-thinking display.

"Our neighbours' two Joseph nativity is up & I'm beaming," the popular lesbian comedian told her 105,000 followers.

The scene shows two bearded men dressed in pink praying over the baby Jesus, alongside a row of candy canes. A traditional nativity scene would have one Joseph, a Mary and perhaps three wise men (who presumably aren't gay).

Her followers thought it was hilarious.

"Man the birth of jesus was DEFINITELY a miracle now," wrote @MagsVisaggs.

"The Bible says that Jesus had two dads. I see nothing wrong with this," added @starkidhope.

But religious conservatives weren't amused. Catholic Bishop Thomas Tobin of Providence, Rhode Island, called it an "attack on the Christian faith".

"How sad that someone believes it's okay (or funny or cool) to impose their own agenda on the holy Birth of Jesus," he wrote on Facebook.

"Pray for those who did so, for their change of heart, and that Jesus will forgive this sacrilege."

A gay nativity in California featuring two Marys and no Joseph made headlines in 2011 when it was vandalised.
