The South African Appeals Court has more than doubled the sentence of Oscar Pistorius for shooting model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

Prosecutors called the original six-year sentence "shockingly lenient".

The court ruled his sentence be increased to 15 years, less time served.

Reeva Steenkamp's family have issued a statement, saying the ruling has "verified there is justice".

The athlete was not in court for the ruling.

Pistorius was jailed in July 2016, after being found guilty on appeal of murdering Ms Steenkamp on Valentine's Day 2013.

The athlete claimed he mistook Ms Steenkamp for a burglar when he shot her four times through a locked toilet door at his home in Pretoria.
