Voluntary euthanasia to be legalised in Victoria

Voluntary euthanasia has been legalised in the Australian state of Victoria.

The legislation cleared its final hurdle on Wednesday after politicians in the state's upper house voted 22-18 in favour of legalising voluntary assisted dying.

AAP reported Labour MP Gavin Jennings told the legislative council after the vote: "This is a momentous day in the parliament of Victoria."

The vote came after a marathon session, which began on Tuesday at midday and ended over a day later.
