A Democrat has taken out alleged sex abuser and Republican Roy Moore to be elected to the US Senate.

Doug Jones defeated Mr Moore, who has been accused of paedophilia, in a close special election in Alabama.

It's a blow to US President Donald Trump and the Republican Party, who hold a narrow majority in the Senate.

It's the first Democrat in the conservative state to be elected to the Senate in more than 20 years.

Mr Moore has refused to concede the election result, and is reportedly asking supporters to pray for him.

Ahead of the election, Mr Trump told supporters to "get out and vote for Roy Moore".

In a tweet the US President slammed Mr Jones with a lengthy character assassination.

"The people of Alabama will do the right thing. Doug Jones is Pro-Abortion, weak on Crime, Military and Illegal Immigration, Bad for Gun Owners and Veterans and against the WALL. Jones is a Pelosi/Schumer Puppet. Roy Moore will always vote with us. VOTE ROY MOORE!" he said.
