A beauty salon in China is under fire for making staff slap each other across the face on stage to try and "motivate" them, local media reports.

A video clip, which has now gone viral, shows women kneeling in pairs taking turns to slap each other in Nanchang, capital of the Jiangxi province, at the Jinhuayuan Beauty Salon event.

A worker told local media the exercise was meant to "strengthen team bonds".

The women, who all work for the Chinese company Nanchang Jinhuayuan Meiye, were reportedly told they had been underperforming all year - making it unclear whether the exercise was intended as a punishment or as team-building.

The exercise was conducted on stage at the end-of-year gala and involved around 10 employees, as hundreds of colleagues looked on.

It's not the first time businesses in China have come under scrutiny for forcing staff into bizarre practices.

The South China Morning Post reports in 2016 businessmen were made to crawl along the street if they didn't reach their targets, while another company made new recruits kiss rubbish bins to boost their courage.
