Coincidence or fate? A man has spotted himself in the background of a childhood photo of his fiancée, taken years before they even met.

London woman Verona Koliqi posted the unlikely tale on Instagram. About a decade ago her family was on vacation in Montenegro, next to their home country of Kosovo.

That's where and when the photo in question was taken.

"I was looking at this old beach photo that was taken 10 years ago and showed my fiancé (now) the photo so we can have a laugh and run down memory lane," she wrote on Instagram.

"Being the type to look behind the photo he noticed the kid in the back had the same shirt, shorts and floaty as him."

She told website Yahoo Lifestyle about the strange moment everything clicked.

"He said, 'Hold up, I think that's me!' We both looked at each other and said, 'No way, that can't be true.'"

They asked her fiancé's family, who confirmed that yes,10 years ago they had been on holiday in Montenegro.

"I never knew something like this could happen, even though I've heard a saying: 'You will have passed your soul mate at least once way before you actually meet up,'" said Ms Koliqi.

The couple met for real in 2016 in Kosovo, and were engaged soon afterwards.

The post on Instagram has been liked more than 31,000 times.
