Police have been left bewildered after discovering a saltwater crocodile in a suburban street in Melbourne on Christmas night.

Police say two people discovered the one-metre-long croc, which was "sitting quietly" on the footpath.

Officers were called to assist but turned the case over to a reptile catcher instead, ABC News reports.

It's not known how the crocodile managed to end up in the area.

It will be looked after by the catcher until staff from the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning can collect it.

Police ask anyone missing their crocodile, or with information about its owner, to contact Crime Stoppers.
