A sea turtle that was tangled up in 800 kilograms of cocaine has been rescued off the coast of Florida.

The US Coast Guard was on a drug patrol on November 19, when it found the loggerhead turtle trapped by 26 bales of cocaine, strung together in international waters.

The line had wrapped around the turtle's neck and legs, injuring it and leaving it unable to swim away.

Crew aboard the Coast Guard 'Cutter Thetis' were able to cut the lines wrapped around the turtle's neck and set him free.

The drugs have now been confiscated and have been valued at more than NZ$75 million.
