  • 04/12/2017

During the final debate on legalising same sex marriage in Australia, an MP took a break to propose to his partner in Parliament.

Speaking through tears Tim Wilson asked his partner Ryan Bolger, who was sitting in the public gallery, if he would marry him.

Mr Wilson is a Liberal party MP and an openly gay member of Parliament.

During his speech he referred to the struggles faced by him and his partner and said the debate on same sex marriage "has been the soundtrack to our relationship".

The Speaker said that the record should note "a resounding yes" from Mr Bolger.

It's believed to be the first time that a marriage proposal has been made in the Australian House of Representatives.
