An American mother has faced heavy criticism after she admitted to asking her five-year-old daughter to pay rent.

Essence Evans posted on Facebook about the unorthodox scheme, saying she's using it as a way to teach her daughter financial responsibility.

"Every week she gets $7 in allowance... I make her give me $5 back. $1 for rent, $1 for water, $1 for electricity, $1 for cable and $1 for food," Ms Evans wrote.

"The other $2 she gets to save or do what she wants with."

Ms Evans says the money all gets put into a savings account for her daughter, which will prepare her for when she leaves home when she's 18.

Comments were mixed on Ms Evans' method of teaching her daughter responsibility. Some said it was a great idea while others claimed Ms Evans was making her daughter stressed without good reason.

"Great idea," one commenter said. "Definitely want to try this when my daughter is five."

"Let the child be a child... let that come at a certain age, don't stress a child about bills at five, like really?" said another.
