Donald Trump's lawyer paid hush money to an ex-porn star a month before the 2016 election, according to a new report.

The Wall Street Journal says Stephanie Clifford, stage name Stormy Daniels, was paid US$130,000 to keep quiet about a "sexual encounter" the pair had in 2006, a year after Mr Trump married his current wife Melania.

The pair reportedly met at a celebrity golf tournament at Lake Tahoe when Ms Clifford was 27. Mr Trump would have been about 60.

A White House official told the Journal claims of a sexual encounter between the pair were "old, recycled reports which were… strongly denied".

It's not known if Mr Trump was aware of the payment, which occurred around the same time an old recording of Mr Trump surfaced, in which he could be heard saying his fame allowed him to get away with groping women.

Mr Trump denied inappropriate sexual behaviour alleged by multiple women during the election campaign.

In the past week, the US President has caused outrage over his description of developing countries as "shitholes", and mistaken a fictional fighter jet from a video game for the real thing.
