Locals rushed to take samples of a huge chunk of ice that fell on their village in India "with a big thud", believing it was an extra-terrestrial object.

But it turned out to be a 12kg block of human excrement that landed in the Fazilpur Badli village over the weekend, and there was a far simpler explanation for it than space matter.

Officials say the ice likely leaked from an aircraft. Waste is usually kept in a tank until touchdown, however it is possible there was a leak on board.

'There was big thud and people of the village came running out of their homes to find out what had happened, Senior Gurgaon official Vivek Kalia told the BBC.

"Some villagers thought it was an extra-terrestrial object. Others thought it was some celestial rock and I've heard that they took samples home."

Some people snuck pieces of it into their clothes and put it in their fridge, the Times of India reported.

But it was "definitely not a meteorological phenomenon, an official from the Indian Meteorological Department confirmed.
