A magnitude 7.6 earthquake has struck north of the Honduras, according to the US Geological Service.

The quake struck at a depth of 10 kilometres, 44 kilometres east of Great Swan Island, Honduras.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre has issued a warning of possible tsunami waves for coastlines within 1000 kilometres of the epicenter.

This affects the coastlines of the Cayman Islands, Jamaica, Mexico, the Honduras, Cuba, Belize, San Andres and Providencia, Costa Rica, Panama, Nicaragua and Guatemala.

The quake was initially measured as a magnitude 7.8 but has since been revised to magnitude 7.6.
