A cat owner has been left in disbelief after their beloved pet was found 15 years after it went missing.

Winston was found wandering the roads of Newport, UK, a few days before Christmas. A concerned citizen took him in to Castle Veterinary Group in fear he may get run over.

In a Facebook post the vet clinic explained the cat appeared to be a stray because of his "sorry state" - but after finding a microchip, they discovered he'd actually been reported missing 15 years earlier.

"We are thrilled to say his owner will be coming to pick him up later today," Castle Veterinary Group said.

"What a wonderful Christmas Winston will have this year!"

During his time on the streets, Winston made a journey of more than 50 kilometres, from St Austell to Launceston.

"The owner couldn't believe she has managed to get her cat back after all this time," the vet clinic said.

They've since posted an update that the feline is settled in well to home life.

"We're told Winston is constantly purring and enjoying all the fuss, grooming and most of all, lots of food!"
