Barack Obama has shared his favourite songs and books of 2017.

It's a long list, but as the former US President said on his official Facebook page on Sunday (local time), he's had "some extra time on my hands this year to catch up".

His favourite books included a variety of genres, both fiction and non-fiction. His first pick was The Power by Naomi Alderman, a science fiction novel about a society controlled by women.

One of the authors who made the President's book list posted about his excitement on Twitter.

Obama's famously eclectic music taste was on full display in his list of his favourite songs of 2017, with a diverse array of artists including Kendrick Lamar, SZA, Mavis Staples and Harry Styles.

Many people took to social media to voice their appreciation for the former Commander in Chief, both for his hip taste in music and his steady leadership - not a feature commonly associated with the current administration.

Obama was recently named the most admired man in the United States, a title he has held every year since his election in 2008.

Current president Donald Trump came in second, making him one of only a few presidents to fail to make the top spot while in office.

Former Secretary of State and first female presidential nominee Hillary Clinton was voted the most admired woman, with former First Lady Michelle Obama coming in second.
