A pilot proposed to his flight attendant girlfriend in mid-air in the United States, to the surprise of her and the passengers.

Jon Emerson picked up the plane's intercom to tell passengers about the flight from Detroit to Oklahoma, but then he went off track.

He began speaking about his girlfriend Lauren Gibbs, who was working as an attendant on the flight.

"It's our anniversary today and she's one of our very best flight attendants, can we get a round of applause for her?" he said.

"She doesn't know this yet but it's going to be even more of a special day for her. I want this day to be known for the rest of her life, I want to spend the rest of my life with her," he said before getting down on one knee to propose.

Passengers began to cheer and applause, and he went back on the intercom to say "she said yes".

The entire proposal was filmed by an off-duty pilot, and Ms Gibbs shared the video on Facebook where it's attracted hundreds of thousands of views.

Ms Gibbs said the proposal still "feels like a dream" and she got to say "the easiest YES of my life to my best friend".

The couple first met while working on a flight, but said the wedding will not be on a plane.
