A five-year-old girl has been discovered trapped in a school bus after falling asleep on her way home from school.

Alyssa Jayde New was reported missing to authorities by her terrified mother at 3.15pm on Monday (local time) after she failed to return from Jimboomba State School, south of Brisbane, according to the Daily Mail.

A search party was immediately set up and police began scouring the area before she was eventually found inside a school bus at the Logan Coaches bus depot at 7.30pm.

While Alyssa was trapped in the bus, temperatures reached 29degC in Brisbane.

"Alyssa was located petrified and crying banging on the school bus doors to get out," her mother told the Daily Mail.

A spokesperson for the bus company said they were investigating how Alyssa Jayde got trapped on the bus.

The Courier Mail reports the mix up may have occurred if the driver did not conduct a proper check of the bus before leaving the depot.

Alyssa's mother, Bobbie Langdon, said her lawyer would be in touch with the bus company and her daughter would not be headed back to Jimboomba State School.
