A US teenager was only "one millimetre from death" after falling from a treehouse and lodging a screw in his skull, doctors say.

Darius Foreman, 13, was building his new hangout when he fell over, bring down a wooden board with him, which had the screw sticking out.

X-rays show it stuck between the two halves of his brain.

Transporting him to hospital proved difficult, CNN reports, because the screw was still attached to the wood. Fire crews used the family saw to scale down the size of the plank.

Darius was only "a millimetre away from having himself bleed to death", neurosurgeon Dr Alan Cohen told CNN, after removing the foreign object from Daruis' head.

He's been released from hospital and is expected to make a full recovery, and was even allowed to take the screw home as a memento.
