Thrilling footage has emerged of the moment a firefighter caught a child falling from a burning apartment.

Fire crews were called to the blaze at the Avondale Forest Apartments in Dekalb County in Georgia, Atlanta on January 3.

Capt. Scott Stroup caught the child after she was dropped by her father as they descended a ladder, CBS reports.

The family were escaping from a flame-engulfed balcony on the third floor of the building.

The video, which was taken by another firefighter's helmet camera, was posted to social media on Sunday (local time).

Capt. Stroup wasn't the only child-catching hero at the apartment blaze - Capt. Jackie Peckrul caught a baby who was thrown by desperate parents from the third floor of the building.

"I don't really feel like a hero, I don't think any of us do," she told CBS. "It's our job."

The fire left four adults and eight children with minor injuries.
