In a spectacular act of "instant karma", a hunter in Maryland was knocked unconscious when a goose fell on him after being shot by another member of his hunting party.

On Thursday (local time) Robert Meilhammer, 51, was out hunting with three friends when one of them shot at a flock of Canada geese flying overhead.

The dead goose fell for about 30 meters and landed on Mr Meilhammer's head, knocking out two of his teeth and leaving him unconscious.

"This is what he gets for killing an innocent animal," one Twitter user wrote.

"Wow. Talk about instant karma," said another.

"Guess he should have ducked," wrote a third.

He eventually regained a "hazy" consciousness and he was rushed to a nearby airport where he was airlifted to a shock trauma centre.

Emergency services told NPR Mr Meilhammer's head injury is "severe", but he is in a stable condition.
