The contents of a letter that saw US President Donald Trump's daughter-in-law hospitalised have been revealed.

Vanessa Trump, wife of Mr Trump's eldest son Donald Jr, was taken to hospital as a precaution after being exposed to a mystery white powder that accompanied the letter on Monday (local time).

That powder was declared non-toxic hours later, and is now believed to have been corn starch.

Inside the envelope and alongside the powder, however, there was a letter addressed to Donald Trump Jr, the contents of which have now been published.

"You are an awful, awful person," the letter said, according to officials quoted by NBC New York.

"I am surprised that your father lets you speak on TV. You the family idiot. Eric looks smart.

"This is the reason why people hate you. You are getting what you deserve. So shut the f**k up."

Both Trump Jr and wife Vanessa have addressed the incident on Twitter.

"Thank you so much for all the help today in NYC!" Ms Trump wrote. "I appreciate all the quick response to make sure that I was safe!"

Mr Trump Jr said he was "thankful" his family escaped the incident unharmed, but described it as "incredibly scary".

"Truly disgusting that certain individuals choose to express their opposing views with such disturbing behaviour."
