Footage has emerged of a dramatic rescue in England where a woman had to climb on top of her vehicle to escape the rising tide.

The woman became stranded on a Cumbrian coast beach on Monday morning after driving out on the sand.

By the time rescuers arrived on their orange dinghy, the woman was clinging to the top of her car, which was completely submerged in the water between Mawbray and Beckfoot.

The woman could not swim, the BBC reports - so any longer and she may not have been so lucky.

One of the rescuers jumped into the water to help drag her to safety, while others in the boat helped pull her on board.

A rescue spokesperson told The BBC she had mild hypothermia but was otherwise uninjured.

"If it had been much later we could have been looking at a different outcome."
