The world pays tribute to one of the greatest minds of all time

It may be a cliché to describe someone as an inspiration, but there is no title more befitting for the late Stephen Hawking. 

He died aged 76 after a lifetime awing scientists and the public alike with his brilliance, wit, and his encouragement to investigate the universe around us.

He left the world with his pioneering work on black holes and relativity and a sense of inspiration unlike no other.

And across social media the world has been paying its tribute.

From astronauts Scott Kelly and Chris Hadfield to former US President Barack Obama, Hawking's passing has been described as a great loss to humanity.
