'World's best teacher' awarded $1.4 million

A teacher from north London has won a competition to find the world's best teacher. 

Andria Zafirakou, who teaches art and textiles in a Brent secondary school, has won a prize worth NZ$1.4 million.  

The prize from education charity the Varkey Foundation was created to give more status to the teaching profession, with an Oscars-style awards ceremony in Dubai.

With 130 languages spoken in the diverse community where she teaches, Ms Zafirakou has learned basic phrases in Hindu, Tamil and Gujarati. She also visits students at home to strengthen their relationship with the school.

There were more than 30,000 nominations for the award from 173 countries.
