Can you pass the UK citizenship test Meghan Markle will have to take?

Meghan Markle will eventually be put to the test on her UK knowledge if she wants to become a British citizen.

Prince Harry will marry former Suits actress Meghan Markle on 19 May. When the couple announced their engagement on 27 November last year, Harry's communications secretary confirmed Meghan would be applying for citizenship.

The communication's secretary Jason Knauf told the BBC Ms Markle would be "compliant with immigration requirements at all times".

"I can also say she intends to become a UK citizen and will go through the process of that, which some of you may know takes a number of years," he said.

What does it take to become a British citizen? Applicants must have lived in the United Kingdom for three years, be of sound mind, and have a good knowledge of the English language. UK citizens have had to meet a minimum income threshold of £18,600 (NZ$35,800) a year, or have cash savings above £16,000 (NZ$30,800), to bring a partner into the country.

Those seeking citizenship must pass the Life In The UK test, which costs £50 (NZ$96.40).

The test questions changed in 2014 and the pass rate has fallen from 85 percent to 61 percent since then, Metro reported. Participants are required to answer questions ranging from what year England won the World Cup to when Britain split from continental Europe.

The questions are based on the Life In The United Kingdom: A Guide For New Residents handbook.

Meghan has lived in the UK since last November when she and Harry moved into Kensington Palace's Nottingham Cottage. If someone comes to the UK as the fiancée of a British citizen, they must wed within six months.

Ms Markle is expected to apply for dual citizenship down the line, but she has to wait until she's granted permanent residency five years from now. In the meantime she'll be living in the United Kingdom on a family visa, following her marriage to Prince Harry, which will be renewed every 2.5 years.
