Video from inside a New York courthouse shows the moment a man cried after he was exonerated for a crime he didn't commit.

John Bunn, now 41, was 14 years old when he was arrested alongside another teen, Rosean Hargrave, for the 1991 murder of off-duty corrections officer Rolando Neischer.

However both convictions have been overturned after it was revealed the detective in charge of the case had used "false and misleading practices" to get convictions while he was with the NYPD.

Mr Bunn spent 17 years in prison for the murder charge and was released on parole in 2009. He had been convicted 27 years ago.

As the judge read out that he had been exonerated, Mr Bunn became emotional , walked to the bench,  and clutched her hands.

"I want to say thank you, your Honour, because it's been 27 years I've been fighting for my life," he told her.

The Daily News reports the judge, Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice ShawnDya Simpson, was emotional herself.

"I am more than emotional about this day," she said. "You were 14 at the time. This shouldn't have ever happened."
