A family who sold all their furniture, gave away all their money and set fire to their house have been arrested after walking down the street in the nude and getting into a fight with police.

The bizarre scene took place in the tiny town of Southmayd in northern Texas last week, according to local news reports.

"It was kind of weird to see all three of them walking down the highway, naked," witness Larry Sanford told CBS affiliate KXII.

Mr Sanford was driving past when he saw smoke billowing from a shed and heard gunshots.

"When we topped the hill and got down here by the bridge, there were three nude people walking down the road... What they were doing, it's beyond me, but it didn't look good."

Soon the police showed up, and found a mother and father - Michael and Shannon Ouellette - walking down the street naked with their 13-year-old daughter, also in the nude.

They tried to arrest the father but a fight broke out, said Mr Sanford, and they got away. They were reportedly apprehended half-an-hour later after another scuffle.

"They were not acting as a normal person would act," said police Capt Sarah Bigham officer.

Joshua Meek, who lives next door, said they appeared to be "getting ready for the end".

"I've seen a lot of crazy things and that hit the top three list," he told KXII, adding that he recently saw them giving away $100 bills in the park.

An investigation is underway into what triggered the bizarre episode. The daughter has been released from hospital, and tested negative for drug use.
